Editor’s Note: This product has been removed from viewing as part of this site because it has been discontinued. Please see our review on the AVG Internet Security Business Edition, which offers much of the same features.
AVG’s small business internet security suite provides the essentials to keep your computer clean and running smoothly. In addition to the normal features such as antispyware and virus scans, the security suite will also provide protection against hidden threats (rootkits) and malicious websites.
AVG Internet Security SBS Edition is completely scalable for small businesses, and provides comprehensive protection against a number of computer threats on several layers, including workstations, email servers, and file servers. The suite is actually composed of the AVG Email Server Edition, AVG for Windows, for SharePoint, for Windows, for Lotus Domino, and AVG Admin for Windows. With simple management and powerful features, AVG Small Business Edition is one of the best business internet security suites available.
Certifications:
AVG’s firewall is a strong, no holds barred blocker. It might even work too well. It seems to want to ask permission for every program that is installed, and even asks permission multiple times for a few programs that had already been cleared.
The firewall is desktop-based, protecting each employee workstation individually.
Detection & Cleaning:
AVG is home to one of the better antivirus applications available. The virus scan is certified by all three major companies: ICSA, WCL, and VB100%. It is not very common to have a certification from all three companies, which should tell you just how good the antivirus application is.
AVG Internet Security SBS is capable of protecting your entire business from viruses, worms, Trojans, and other malicious software. With an antivirus arsenal complete with real-time (and intelligent) scanning, a solid web shield, and automatic updates, AVG is equipped to defend from the worst internet threats. AVG even includes advanced protection against hidden rootkits.
Internet Protection:
AVG’s antispyware scanner is another feature for which they are well known. While we haven’t found an antispyware scanner that can completely remove all spyware in one pass, AVG’s comes very close. AVG accomplishes this by incorporating ADS (Alternate Data Stream). AVG effectively defends your business from spyware, adware, and identity theft.
AVG Internet Security SBS also comes with protection for email servers, as well as defense from spam. With AVG you can save time by eliminating fraud messages and annoying solicitations that fill up employee inboxes.
The Small Business Edition of AVG Internet Security is specifically designed to work with Microsoft Exchange Servers and Microsoft SharePoint.
Management Features:
AVG also includes an anti-rootkit feature. A rootkit is a malicious piece of software that is used to grant unauthorized administrative access to a computer. This feature is especially useful in a small business setting, where a business owner may not have a dedicated network administrator to watch out for these kinds of risks.
Furthermore, AVG helps you to maintain control over your business resources and enforce company security policies.
Ease of Use:
AVG’s security Suite is relatively small and as such is easy to use. The configuration only requires the setup the desktop firewall while other tasks are setup automatically. The software will alert you when problems arise and then it is simple to take care of the problems as they occur.
The one possible downside to AVG’s business security suite is its drain on system resources. Boot times were noticeably slower as was the time it took to open just about any program.
The installation and actual use of the product is actually aided by the AVG Admin console, which facilitates remote installation and complete central management. AVG Admin also includes tools to help monitor overall security and generate a variety of graphic reports.
Help & Support:
Setting up AVG on your small business computers is a simple process. The only difficult part might be knowing what type of security settings you may want on your machines. Even if you don’t know you can always use the default settings which usually do a good job of keeping your machine safe.
AVG is completely scalable for your small business. Licenses for the security suite can be purchased for as few as 5 computers and as many as two hundred at one or two year subscriptions. More importantly, licenses can be purchased in a number of sizable chunks, with options available in increments of at least 10 (rather than 25 or even 50). This makes AVG a great solution to get exactly what you need, without paying for several extra licenses.
Summary:
AVG lives up to its reputation with its business security suite. The list of features and its easy-to-use design make this software a great value for any small business owner. With comprehensive protection and powerful features, AVG Internet Security SBS Edition is a competitive business suite.
